Current Projects - Updated 12/05/05
Our most recent large gaming project was Historicon 2005, in which
we successfully put on the Battle of Tel El Kebir. The game went well,
but it taught me a number of lessons about the way that Historicon
works in regards to game promotion, setup, etc.. which for some
reason we hadn't learned (or didn't really want to learn for whatever
reason) in previous ventures. As usual, I wish to point out my friend
Walt O'Hara's excellent recap of the game, which can be found by
checking out the 'Blog' link to your left.
Between Historicon and Fall-In, a lot of things have fallen into place
with the Irregulars, and with Jen and myself. We have been playing a
lot more of the 'Flames of War' 15mm miniatures game, and I have
also picked up the Bacchus 'Polemos' rules for the English Civil War.
Finally acquired AK-47 Republic, which has always intrigued me.
Beyond that, the group has seen another spate of DBA and increased
board-gaming on Friday nights.
Currently, I'm planning my strategy for 2006, specifically Cold Wars.
This may be my last HMGS East convention game, and I'm not entirely
sure I want to do it, based upon recent experiences. Nevertheless,
Walt puts on a good show, and I would certainly make an effort for his
con, before the others. The theme is 'The Rise and Fall of Rome'. I
have mentioned to many of you before that I would like to do a few of
my favorite Roman engagements as convention games, and that is
the direction I'm leaning in. The Milvian Bridge is awfully tempting
(particularly given my recent work on Mithras, whose cultists played a
rather prominent role in the battle, along with another Middle Eastern
chap whose name I'm forgetting..), but it is something I'm not sure I'm
equipped to handle. I know the history, but pulling it off correctly with a
set of Ancients rules I can enjoy enough to do it with would be quite a
challenge. Jen and I have also talked about doing Actium, but that is a
matter of acquiring enough ships and floor-space. (We already have
the rules, in that case.)
As a group, things continue to move very swiftly as folks pick up new
armies and paint them. As stated before, interest in FOW is growing
considerably. The group really enjoys the fact that they can get one or
two games done in an Friday or Saturday session with 1500-2000
points. My own objections aside regarding the classification (or lack
thereof) of certain equipment, I'm forced to admit that I do like the
game myself.
Recently, Tim and Phil have been putting on Napoleonic games again,
forcing me to dust off the British Nappies. No objection there. Tim
reported at last contact that he had picked up a large number of
Austrian Napoleonics for SHAKO, which should add a new dimension
to our gaming. My Spanish lead remains completely unpainted. Eh...
one day.
As a whole, the group is quite active with gaming, and there's generally
something happening about every Friday now. As always, we welcome
newcomers to stop by and join us for a miniatures and board gaming.
Good Gaming,
Alex
The Irregulars
Dennis has been
threatening to dust off
Battletech. Oddly
enough, some of us
have never played the
game, though we're
aware of it.
