Who is the Webmaster? What is a 'Honved'?
Who are You?
Most of the work here has been authored by yours truly. My name is
Alex, and I am a graduate student of archaeology in my late twenties of
mixed Magyar/Native-American ethnicity. I have been gaming for a very
long time; historical war-gaming for about the last ten years or so,
although I was initially exposed to the hobby at a very young age. My
parents hated gaming, and still do; my siblings have no interest; many
of my friends found it peculiar. I love it.
In college, I was part of the Adventurers Guild at Ball State University.
The group had been formed to do RPGs in the 1970s, but had fallen
on hard times when I joined. I like to think, during my brief tenure as an
officer there, I did some good in bringing the club back to life and
injecting wargaming, something that the records showed us they'd
done a lot of in the early 1980s. Of course, like about everything I do, I
was probably too honest and too pig-headed for my own good about it.
Upon graduation in 2001, I moved to Northern Virginia (slowly inching
toward my lifelong goal of living on the beach) and spent some time as
a history teacher. During that time, I met the group of guys I proudly call
friends - the Fairfax Irregulars - and introduced the hobby to my
students around the same time. Three years later, I am still a part of
the gaming group, but the students I introduced to the hobby have
disappeared. I suppose they got tired of me bombing their lines of
advance;)
As a gamer, I enjoy all sorts of periods - and I'll even do the occasional
fantasy or sci-fi thing. There is virtually nothing I won't play - except
Empire. I love the 19th century (the group sometimes calls me 'the
19th century guy'), but I will NOT play Empire...
Who are the Fairfax Irregulars?
A long time ago, I had constructed a beautiful website for the Fairfax
Irregulars called, peculiarly enough, 'The Fairfax Irregulars
Homepage'. However, Geocities decided to wipe the entire site after I'd
failed to update it during an illness, and all that is lost for later
reconstruction. However, in the interest of mentioning the gents who
make this possible...
The Fairfax Irregulars are a Northern Virginia based group of miniature
wargamers. Our members include a combined total of more than two
hundred years of wargaming experience, with a wide variety of favorite
periods and rulesets to match. We are known locally for being very
accommodating - in fact, we'll try just about any game once. However,
there are those of us who have certain principles (I won't play Empire,
and Alan won't go anywhere near GASLIGHT... probably a good thing).
The Irregulars have contributed much of the information that will be
posted here in the coming weeks and months, and they should be
given credit for any success here - not yours truly.
In any event, if you're in the Northern Virginia area and would like to find
a gaming group, drop us a line. You are most welcome.
What is a Honved?
You probably mean 'What is THE Honved', right? Honved is a
Hungarian word - the traditional name for the Hungarian Army. The
rebel force that fought in the Revolution of 1848-49 called itself 'The
Honved', and the name has been applied regularly to the Hungarian
Army ever since, though the name has its' origins in the Middle Ages.
Why did I use it? Well... because I happen to be very proud of being
Hungarian (and Native American, which is what my mother happens to
be, though 'Cherokee.com' sounds way too much like a Jeans
Commercial, doesn't it?.. )
What is the Nugget?
An excuse for me to
use my wide variety
of semi-useless
military knowledge
to amuse visitors to
the page. Expect it
to change at least
semi-regularly..
