Useful Resources for Wargamers
Miniatures Distributors
Grandiosity
A wide variety of miniatures lines, they have unfortunately recently cut
their inventory considerably, but what they still have is pretty good.
Wargames
Good people. Fast service. Unusual lines unable to be had any other
way. You can email them credit card info and rest assured that it'll
remain safely with them. Please note - there is an erroneous link on
the Wargames site which will lead you to a dead index. If this happens,
you'll need to load up at the main page, once again.
Miniatures Manufacturers
Castaway Arts
Another chap I've become friendly with over the course of the various
shows is Gerry of Castaway Arts. He runs a good operation, and his
prices are quite reasonable. My favorite colonials come from Gerry..
now... if only I could get around to doing Tel-El Kebir and ordering them.
CinC MicroArmor
Resurfaced again after several years of being "sort of out of business",
as a friend in the industry put it. A good selection of Micro Armor and
Naval miniatures. Good prices, too.
Eureka
My friend Nic Robson runs an excellent company based out of
Australia. Chock full of unusual stuff, including a beautiful Victorian
Sci-Fi Line, some burgeoning 1866 stuff, a hell of a nice line of
Vietnam Aussies, and some beautiful Mexican-American War minis, to
boot (wish I'd known about them before I painted up all those 25s).
GHQ Micro-Armor
Beautiful tanks and warships alike. I wish they'd do a bit more with
their modern lines and expand to other nations. (How about some
modern Japanese armor, guys? Third World naval stuff would be
useful, too)
QRF
I must mention these folks, as they are currently the only manufacturer
of Hungarian vehicles of the WW2 era reliably available (15mm). You
can get them from Wargames, stateside, and a variety of sources,
elsewhere.
Uniform/Painting Guides
Knotel's Uniform Guide Online
A very little known resource, which catalogs much of the work of Knotel
in regards to the uniforms Austria and the various German
principalities in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. An incredibly useful
guide with color illustrations to match.
Wargaming Rules
Free Wargames UK
Peter maintains an amazingly good resource, chock full of free
wargaming rules covering just about everything. As these are free,
some of them are worth avoiding, but the majority are quite good. In
any event, it beats having to shell out thirty bucks for a disappointment.
Weapons Data
Haze Grey and Underway
A very useful resource for naval data - exceptional for modern stuff, hit
or miss if you're dealing with anything WW2 or before. Still well worth
your time. Now that Warships1 is pretty much useless, this is the only
way to travel.
Rest of World Land Combat Systems
Established by a FAS, the ROW site describes with admirable
succinctness a variety of world-wide land based combat systems
which might work with or against the U.S. in any modern war. When I
began my interest in WARPAC armor, this was the site that helped to
get me started. I still refer to it quite often. Unfortunately, the rest of the
FAS site isn't so well organized, and it can be quite frustrating. If you
can navigate the maze of links, the section on airpower is quite
excellent, though somewhat small; the naval section is probably worth
a miss.
Spanamwar.Com
In addition to being dedicated to one of my favorite subjects, the
webmaster and his cohorts have established a truely exceptional
guide to the naval forces used in the conflict, along with a handful of
articles regarding land based weaponry. While not complete (there are
ships missing and a lack of data on land weapons systems and
engagements), this is one of the most accurate, unbiased resources
on the Spanish American War that I have seen in a very, very long time.
Occasionally, articles seem to "disappear" from the site. The excellent
article on the Battle of Fajardo (which the Spanish won, incidentally), is
no longer apparently there.
Beautiful 10mm and
28mm troops can be
found for everything
from Ancient through
Sci-Fi at Pendraken UK.
Carries a particularly
nice range of mid-19th
century European troops.
